Secret Garden

Buleleng: The North of Bali is the world on the other side of the mountains, the large regency of Buleleng, overlooking the radiant and gentle Java Sea. This is a region of geographical superlatives. It boasts the wildest mountains and more waterfalls than in any other region in Bali. The economy of the north is based primarily on agriculture. It has rich plantations of coffee, cloves and fruit trees and some of the finest strains of Bali rice. A short trip of approximately 4 km from Singaraja to Sambangan takes you to the departure point. Our park ranger will show you a magnificent path snaking upward through rice terraces, plantations of cloves and coffee.

Trekking: Along the trail there are many spots that afford splendid views of the north of Bali. After passing secluded farms and rivers, discover the glory of several lovely waterfalls where you can take a refreshing bath in a natural “bath tub”. The Balinese are renowned for their friendliness and hospitality. Visitors of the villages are always welcomed by farmers who will be pleased to show you their traditional homes. The end of your trekking day will be a pleasant break at the “Shanti” Resort. Enjoy the magic athmosphere of the early evening and enjoy the view over the valley, before we bring you back to the Matahari Beach Resort & Spa.

Brahma - Ashrama Vihara
This Buddhist monastery founded in 1958 by one of Bali’s few Buddhist monks, the late Bhikku Giri Rakhita is set into a hillside a few miles inland from Banjar and offers spectacular view over the valley. Inside the temple, you can see a miniature of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Candi Borobudur - the biggest Buddhist temple in Indonesia, situated in central Java near the city of Yogyakarta. Visitors can participate in a meditation session called Vipassana, which focuses on breathing and mental peacefulness.

Village of Pedawa
Pedawa is a “Bali Age – older village”, the inhabitants claim them selves as “old Balinese”. Here palm sugar – which is called gula sari - is still made the traditional way: several slits are made into the bud of a coconut tree and the sap collected, to be boiled until it thickens. This thickened substance is poured into bamboo tubes between 3-5 inches in length, and left to solidify to form cylindrical cake blocks.

Munduk
The traditional way of processing coffee is to allow freshly handpicked beans to be laid out to dry in the sun. After up to two weeks the outer shells turn dark brown and brittle. The beans are pounded by hand to remove the dried husks. They are then kept in a warehouse for at least a year to allow time for maturing. The villagers of Munduk still use traditional methods to produce their own powdered coffee. Bali coffee is famous because the coffee beans do not lose their unique aroma during the process.

There are a number of temples throughout Bali that commemorate miraculous events in the life of the 16th century priest, Danghyang Nirartha. The temple contains a relic, a curl of the sage's hair (rambut), which is being venerated here.

Bunut Bolong
The sacred tree is situated on the ridge of a hill, on the east side flanked by a clove plantation and on the west side by a gorge with excellent lush green tropical forest.  The name Bunut Bolong is given due to the unique characteristic of this tree. the word “bunut” is the Balinese name for a species of fig which has similar characteristic with the banyan tree,  Bolong means „hole“ -  the diameter of the hole can accommodate two cars side by side. The road through the Bunut Bolong tree was build since it is impossible to build the road either on the right or the left side of the tree. Moreover, cutting down the tree was out of question since the spirits that reside in the tree refuse to move out from the tree. The set of shrines that accompany this sacred tree is known as Pujangga Sakti Temple that is established to honor the great sage Dang Hyang Sidhi Mantra who passed this area hundreds of years ago.
