At Denpasar International Airport you will be welcomed with a smile. Heading for the north coast we would like to show you some of the most alluring spots the island of the Gods has to offer – there is a lot to discover on the 3-hour drive to the Matahari Beach Resort & Spa.

Our trip starts in the densely populated south of the island, already 30 minutes later, after passing Kuta Beach – the centre of tourist attraction and the lively capital Denpasar we have left the hustle and bustle, and soon you will understand why a distinguished US Magazine has nominated this island as one of the most beautiful island worldwide.

Bali’s scenic beauty is legendary, but the island is also famous as heaven for artists and as island of the 10.000 temples. One of the most stunning – Pura Mengwi – is located wayside. Our temples are not closed buildings, but open courtyards with chiselled gates and gods throne crafted by gifted artists.

The temples are most stunning to discover during feasts, carrying elaborate offerings, dressed in colourful costumes the people rush to the temple to honour the gods.

Passing the small villages you are able to catch a glimpse of daily rural life. Our traditional granges are built in a similar way as our temples – no wonder life and religion go hand in hand here on the island of the gods. Somewhere in a distance there’s always the sound of a temperamental gamelan orchestra – do they practice for a temple festivity, a dance performance or a burning ceremony? There’s always a reason to celebrate here in Bali!

The nature is the focus of the second part of the trip, the legendary lavish green rice terraces! Due to it’s fertile soil Bali’s fortunate rice farmers can harvest 3 times a year. Dewi Sri, goddess of rice is honoured constantly so that this will not change.
Slowly we leave the palm trees and the coastal area and drive up the mountains, which we believe is home to the gods. After two hours drive we have reached the cool mountainous Bedugul, coffee, cocoa, vanilla and cloves are grown here. 3 holy mountain lakes – Bratan, Buyan and Tamblingan rest in the breach of an extinct volcano. Care for a round of golf? The famous Bali Handara Kosaido Golf Club is located here in Bedugul.

We head west towards Munduk to be faced with one of the islands most spectacular sceneries: we view far onto the Indian Ocean over spice plantations and rice terraces. In Seririt we are back in coastal area, we drive along the quiet northern shore, it’s quaint villages and fertile farmland – where even wine grows.

We hope you enjoyed this exciting trip and now please be welcomed by our Matahari team who looks forward to spoil you from head to toe!

During your holiday you will find time to make excursions to some more cultural highlights or explore the rice fields, the rural environment and the nearby volcanic region, but off the record – once arriving in our resort, many of our guest do not have the desire to leave our small paradise – even for a few hours…
